Our Impact – Delivering School Desks – June 2016

In June 2016, I contracted with Phynnly Masiku to have twenty (20) desks built and delivered to an elementary school in the Chiwamba area.  We were thrilled with quality and finish of the desks and the students were surprised and thrilled to receive the desks.

Projects

The heart of Africa Vital Living are the projects that we undertake to transform lives in Africa.  In keeping with our mission our projects are focused in these areas:

  • Drilling & repairing water wells to provide fresh, clean water in villages
  • Providing furniture and resources to educational insitutions
  • Providing clothing and hygine resoures to African residents
  • Proving tools and seed to those African residents who farm the land

Take some time to review the projects we are undertaking and make a donation to help us complete these projects.  The need in Africa is great and while no one organization can solve all the challenges on the continent, Africa Vital Living seeks to make the great difference with the resources God has made available to us through donors like you.

Repairing Water Wells

A number of years ago the government of Malawi undertook a project of drilling water wells in villages throughout the country.  During this process they put all of the infrastructure in place for wells including the piping and and pumps.  While this initial effort was well funded by the United Nations, no provision was made to maintain the wells after the inital drilling and set-up so over the transition of time, many of these wells have fallen into disrepair and need parts and maintenance in order to provide the life giving water just below the surface.

Your donation will have to by spare parts to repair these wells through the homeland.  Some wells require minimal repairs as simple as an inexpenssive O-ring while other wells need more extensive repairs or upgrades. Your generous donation to our repair fund will help us to make life changing repairs to these wells.

Drilling Water Wells

Water is one of the key components  to sustain life.  A number of challenges exist to having adequate water in the African village:

  • DDistance::: IIn some cases there is well water available but vvillagers have to travel long distances (ooover a quarter of a mile) to ffill  their bbuckets and then ttransport water back to their home.   IIn some instances, there are hills and terrain that has to be negioated in order to successfully obtain the required water needed every day.
  • Obtaining: IIIn ssome cases there is water available but the only way to obtain the water is to lowerr a 2-55 gallon bbucket down into a weell on a rope and draw the water up.  So in addition to carrying the water to and from home, additional physciall effort is required to put up some 110-20 bucckets of water to fill  the larger container.
  • Contamination:  In some vvillage ssituations,, a well has been dug but it is not adequately covered or protected from external elements.  CChildrren and others sometimes throw traash and other debris into the wells.  AAAnimals sometime fall into these open holes or ddeposit their animal waste into these wells making for an unhealthy situation.
  • Water Table:  In some situations,, the well that waas dug hadd an adequate water table but tthat water ssupply has dried up and the well is no longer viable as a rreliable source of water.

The goal of ourr water well drilling project iis to overcome these obstacles and provide a quality aaand rellliable source of water ttthrough the drilling aaand installation of a hhand pppumping ssstation.  Your donation to this project will help to ddrill holes tto the water table, install  the necessary piping  to the table   and install a reliable hand pump to puump out the water on a regular basis.

The cost to dig and set up a good working quality water pump is $5000.  Your donation to this effort will help to bring water to villages that need this precious human resource.
